We are proud to announce that two of our dedicated scholars from the Self-Reliant Farm, Jolina B. Estopin and Lars Keneth A. Villono, are embarking on an exciting new journey. Both have been accepted to study Agriculture at Western Philippines University.
Before reaching this milestone, both Jolina and Lars completed their high school education at Central Taytay Senior High School. During their time there, they lived at the Holy Family Dormitory, a facility generously sponsored by the Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay, which provided them with a supportive environment to focus on their studies.
Meet the Scholars
Jolina and Lars share a deep-rooted connection to the land of Culion and a profound desire to give back to their families and the farm that has supported them.
Jolina B. Estopin
Jolina, the youngest of six siblings, was inspired to join the scholarship program after seeing how other scholars under Fr. John had succeeded in life. Her decision was driven by a desire to ease the financial burden on her parents—her father, a fisherman, and her mother, who is currently ill.
Her Ambition: Jolina aims to finish her studies to repay the kindness shown to her and secure a job at the Self-Reliant Farm to support her family.
A Heart for Home: "I joined Father's scholarship program... so my parents wouldn't struggle anymore, especially since they are getting older and my mom is sick".
Lars Keneth A. Villono
Lars, a half-katutubo from Sitio Cabulihan, followed in the footsteps of his older sister, Glycel, who is also a scholar pursuing nursing. For Lars, the scholarship was a "big blessing" that allowed him to improve his grades and focus on his growth.
His Ambition: He dreams of becoming a community-based agricultural advocate who will help local farmers thrive.
Giving Back: Lars is committed to finishing his degree so he can return to the farm and apply his skills in Agriculture, honoring the opportunity he was given.
Sowing Seeds of Self-Reliance
The transition of Jolina and Lars to Western Philippines University marks a significant step toward our goal of fostering a self-sustaining community. By studying modern agricultural techniques, these scholars are preparing to bring vital knowledge back to Culion, ensuring the long-term health and productivity of the Self-Reliant Farm.
If you would like to help our scholars achieve their dreams, please consider donating to the WE Foundation. We are deeply committed to furthering Fr. John's vision for the Self-Reliant Farm and ensuring that the youth of Culion have the tools they need to build a brighter, more sustainable future.
