We are pleased to share the success story of Ian Acosta, the first vocational scholar of the Self-Reliant Farm program to complete his training and return to contribute to the farm’s development.
Ian recently graduated from a three-year agricultural training program at Mary Help of Christian School (MHCS), made possible through the support of the Self-Reliant Farm scholarship and the generosity of the Daughters of Mary sisters. His journey began during regular visits to the farm, where conversations with Fr. John led to an opportunity to resume his education. After discussions with his family and careful consideration, Ian committed to the program.
Since his return, Ian has taken on a key role in farm operations, particularly in managing livestock, particularly the goats. In addition, he has begun applying new skills in beekeeping and honey production—both valuable contributions to the farm’s sustainability goals.
Looking ahead, Ian has expressed a strong interest in continuing his education by pursuing a college degree. His long-term goal is to further develop his knowledge in agriculture and continue contributing meaningfully to the farm and the broader community.
Ian’s transition from scholar to staff represents a milestone in our vocational program. His story underscores the long-term impact of targeted educational support and the value of training local youth who are committed to serving their communities.
We look forward to seeing more scholars follow in Ian’s footsteps as we continue to strengthen and expand our Education and Scholarship initiative.
